Interests and Personality
Biography | Arlene was the 1st African American to be confirmed with a Masters of Science in Art Education from Indiana University’s Herron School of Art. While living in Indianapolis, her visual statements were seen on the 1st Indianapolis Black Expo Program Booklet and as part of the mural project “Urban Walls”. In 1982, as Vice President of the Chicago Chapter of NCA, Arlene chaired the planning committee for the 25th Anniversary Conference which was held in Chicago in 1983. Arlene is currently an Executive Board member of the African American Arts Alliance; a founding member of the Sutherland Community Arts Initiative and Sapphire & Crystals, an African American women’s artist collective. In addition to her creative efforts, she is a wife, mother, University administrator and friend. Visit my other website at www.arleneturnercrawford.com |
Interests | I am an image-maker; a maker of images of Black people. These people populate my consciousness in the future perfect tense. I create using Black aesthetic principles in my process: Frontality of form; rhythm; harmony of rich and vibrant color, with self-determination and the kinky-ness in our ideas. I make images that address our past, our now, and our hope for a humanity that forces life, growth and power. The paintings, drawings and assemblages I create, attempt to manifest for the viewer a sense of who we are and who we hope to be. |
Music | I fill my ears with music, when creating because I believe our music is our most successful art form. Within our music lays the keys to the “BLACK” creative psychology. Jazz is my preferred muse; it is spontaneous, immediate, inventive, profound and very much connected to our power. |
Heroes | “`I Am because We Are’ was a hue and cry seen in several works by AfriCobra artists. This message conveys to me a role and purpose for my creativity. The African aesthetic is grounded in purpose; the African term for art is not separated from function. Within the Black Arts Movement the image-makers functioned for cultural nationalism. Our art should help us define ourselves, identify our customs and values and direct us to higher consciousness.” |
