Interests and Personality
Biography | Radoslav Dobrev Hristov was born in Ruse (Bulgaria) in 1974. He began his artistic education in the National High School of Fine Arts in Sofia. In 2001 he concluded his Master’s Degree in Christian Iconography at the Theological Faculty of Veliko Tarnovo University.
The creative process of the iconographer Radoslav is oriented towards a revival of the icon. Just like the monks icon-painters from the monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai (Egypt) between the tenth and the thirteenth century, the author tries to show visible “the invisible”. The light in his icons acquires specific symbolism and a particular meaning and tries to overcome the ¨world of apparencies¨ and to penetrate the ¨veracious¨ world. |
Interests | In order to render the idea of light as ¨divine energy¨ the gilded surfaces are burnished and polished in various ways. Painting directly on the gold with semitransparent colors, the Sinai monks and the author transmit to us their vision about the world saved by ¨God’s grace¨ which “transfers into light everything it illuminates”. |
Music | The light and the observer participate into the work, because every change in their position causes a different perception of it: some flashes of light appear, others die out, some colors ¨inflame¨, and others darken. The optical effects achieved are impossible for photography to capture and it is just as impossible to imitate them using other means distinct from the original technique. |
Films | In our days, the iconographer Radoslav Dobrev Hristov, impressed by the unique effect of the Sinai icons, has achieved a revival of the secrets of the technique of the Byzantine Sinaitic icon, which cannot, unfortunately, be found in medieval tracts and manuals that have reached us; there are no contemporary studies dedicated to this topic. |
Television | After more than ten years of self-study, practice, research and experimentation, the author has explored and revived various medieval techniques of painting and gilding. He has thus reached the stage of communicating the ideal of spiritual perfection as a dynamic process of light and color, technically, aesthetically and artistically on an excellent level. Within the history of iconography, this achievement makes his creations true master works and among contemporary icons, probably the most beautiful in the world. |
